WHITEHORSE MUSTANGS
Referee
Are you aged 14 or over and interested in becoming a paid basketball referee?
The Camberwell Technical Officials Commission (TOC) oversees the training, development, mentoring and governance of referees who officiate Whitehorse Basketball games. Each year, the TOC delivers beginner referee training courses designed to introduce new officials to the game in a supportive and structured environment.
These courses are open to anyone aged 14 years and over, including adults. No prior playing or refereeing experience is required. Whether you are currently playing, have played in the past, or are completely new to basketball, you are welcome to take part.
Becoming a referee is a fantastic opportunity to:
- Earn income in a flexible, paid role
- Build confidence and communication skills
- Develop leadership and decision-making abilities
- Improve your understanding of the game
- Stay active and involved in basketball
- Give back to the sport and your club
Refereeing also provides clear development pathways. Officials receive ongoing coaching, mentoring and feedback, with opportunities to progress through referee grades and officiate higher-level competitions over time.
Why It Matters
The Whitehorse Mustangs are responsible for maintaining a strong and sustainable referee pool to ensure all home games are adequately and professionally officiated. By becoming a referee, you are directly supporting your teammates, your club, and the wider basketball community.
We strongly encourage all players, parents, past players and members of our community to consider taking on the whistle. Refereeing plays a vital role in the success of our competition and creates opportunities for personal growth both on and off the court.

Respect Our Officials
Basketball cannot be played without referees and game day officials. They are essential to every match, every team, and every competition.
The majority of our referees are young people who are learning, developing, and doing their best each week. Abuse, intimidation, or aggressive behaviour toward referees or venue staff will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
We expect all players, coaches, and spectators to:
- Treat referees and Venue Supervisors with respect
- Accept decisions without personal or abusive commentary
- Raise genuine concerns through the appropriate channels
- Model positive behaviour for our junior players
If you have a question about a rule or decision, please speak respectfully with the Venue Supervisor rather than directing frustration toward officials.
Creating a safe and supportive environment is a shared responsibility. When we protect and respect our referees, we protect the future of our game.
Whitehorse Mustangs Basketball Club is committed to zero tolerance for referee abuse.
