Mustangs Guide to the New FIBA Rules

Basketball is evolving, with new FIBA Official Basketball Rule changes coming into effect from 1 October 2026. These updates will introduce changes to the way certain situations are interpreted, officiated, and managed across the game.

At Whitehorse Basketball, we want to ensure our players, coaches, parents, spectators, and officials have access to the information they need to understand these changes ahead of their introduction.

FIBA’s 2026 rule updates include several significant changes, including updates to:

  • Act of Shooting (Article 15)
  • Technical Fouls (Article 36)
  • Disruptive Fouls (Article 37)
  • Flagrant Fouls (Article 38)
  • Referee Signals (Appendix A)
  • Removal of Unsportsmanlike Fouls

These changes will impact how certain situations are assessed during games and will require everyone involved in basketball to learn and adapt to the updated interpretations.

Like players, coaches, and spectators, our referees, venue supervisors, and referee coaches are also learning these new rules.

Understanding, interpreting, and applying rule changes consistently takes time, particularly in the fast-paced environment of competition.

Registrations

The EDJBA 2021 Winter Season will close on which is scheduled to start on 24th April. Registrations for that season will open soon. Teams are being formed from 20th March after which time placement in teams will be dependent on a spot being available. Payment is required at registration. The registration fee includes what was previously game day fees. No additional weekly payments are required for the entire season, including finals.

The Mustangs welcome any children from age 6 to 23. For more information on the registration process will be available when registrations open by click the button below, or contact the Whitehorse Basketball Association.
