From Mustangs to NBA Rising Stars

The Whitehorse Mustangs were proud to have one of our referees and staff members Jack Stewart selected to officiate at the NBA Rising Stars Invitational (RSI) Australian Qualifiers earlier this year.

The NBA Rising Stars Invitational Australian Qualifiers brought together some of Australia’s most talented high school basketball players, coaches and managers in a high-performance tournament environment. The event served as Australia’s qualification tournament for the NBA Rising Stars Invitational Finals in Singapore, with teams competing for the opportunity to represent Australia against the best high school basketball programs from across the Asia-Pacific region.

Selection to officiate at the event was a significant achievement and reflected the dedication, commitment and professionalism required to progress through the officiating pathway.

Having begun refereeing through the Camberwell TOC Referee Program in 2022, the opportunity represented an important milestone in Jack’s development journey. Throughout the tournament, officials worked alongside talented referees from across Metropolitan and Country Victoria.

The experience provided valuable exposure to a higher level of basketball, challenging the referees to apply their skills in a fast-paced and competitive environment while continuing their growth both on and off the court. Just as players were competing for the chance to advance to an international NBA event, officials like Jack were able to develop their craft in one of the country’s premier junior basketball tournaments.

Jack said the selection highlighted the opportunities available to officials within Victoria and this is just another reason why everyone should give refereeing a go.

“The NBA Rising Stars Invitational was an incredible development opportunity and shows the range of pathways available to young officials. Refereeing provides opportunities to travel, develop leadership skills, build confidence and be involved in high-level basketball. This selection is just another example of why everyone should consider giving refereeing a go.”

Whitehorse Basketball remain committed to providing quality development opportunities for referees with the help of our Technical Officials partners the Camberwell Basketball TOC and supporting pathways that allow officials to reach their potential. Experiences such as the NBA Rising Stars Invitational play an important role in developing the next generation of basketball referees.

Congratulations on representing the Whitehorse Mustangs at this prestigious event and on the professionalism shown throughout the tournament Jack.
